Being in my third year of university, I often think about my future career and where marketing will be when I begin working. Everything is so faced paced, what will be the norm in 5 years? Is was definietly a very different world 5 years prior.
A line in week two’s lecture resonated with me,
“Blending of traditional and social media”.
This is the future. Whenever I am watching television or a tv show my attention is divided. I’m either on my phone, which is never too far away, or on my laptop, possibly researching further into what I’m watching. How often have you watched a commercial or a tv show and it’s peaked your interest? It happens to me almost every time I watch TV, and the first thing I do is reach for the nearest gadget with a web browser.
I began to think, television and gadgets work perfectly hand in hand, there must be a better way to integrate these devices that could benefit marketers. This is when Microsoft SmartGlass caught my attention.
SmartGlass is an application that can be downloaded on to any mobile device that you already own and is used to control your Xbox entertainment system.
SmartGlass has the potential to change the way we browse the web, play games and watch television. Microsoft gives the example of watching Game of Thrones on Xbox and using your tablet. The tablet has much more information about the TV show in your hands as well as maps and character summaries.
Instead of the consumer being left to their own devices on the web where they can be easily distracted, Microsoft are taking them by the hand (mind the pun) and leading them directly to the information that they are searching for.
I can see this technology taking off and really putting marketers to the test with how they can benefit from this. Here is the ad by Microsoft explaining SmartGlass.
In what ways do you think we can use this application to advertise on? Is there a way to promote without looking too much like an ad?
